Photography, Styling & Interview RAD HOURANI
RAD HOURANI Could you both tell us a little more about yourselves and how you got into modelling?
JESSIANN GRAVEL I was born in a little town in Mont Saint-Hilaire in Quebec, Canada. I started modelling when I was thirteen years old. It was a friend of my dad’s who introduced me to a model scout and put me in contact with Montage and I’ve been with this agency for over thirteen years now. I was doing some photo shoots, but I was still so young. It wasn’t until I turned fifteen that I started doing fashion week around the world. My mom went with me everywhere, she followed me around the world until I was almost eighteen and it was amazing, we had a lot of fun together.
FRANCISCO LACHOWSKI I’m from a city in the south of Brazil, called Curitiba. I started modelling when I was seventeen years old, I won a modelling contest in Brazil and got the chance to do fashion week in Paris and Milan. Luckily, I was in a great runway show from my first season on and was able to do my first campaign for Dior Homme. After that, my career just took off.
JG We met somewhere in September 2010 in Japan.
FL It was in a bar in Tokyo.
RH What were you both doing in Tokyo?
JG I was there for several photo shoots. They’d booked me for the entire month of September and I ended up staying for almost two months because I kept getting more jobs.
FL I went there at the end of the summer, that’s the time when Europe and the US are slower for modelling jobs. It ended up being a good month for work, and it also turned out to be the trip that introduced me to the love of my life.
RH Do you remember where you were right before going to Japan?
JG I think I was in Montreal before, or at least my flight left from Montreal. But I can’t remember what I was doing before that.
FL I was working in New York and went to Brazil for a week to spend some time with my family before going to Japan.
RH Tell me about the night you met each other.
JG Well, it was in a bar where all the models would meet up after work to have some fun together. And when Chico walked in, I asked my friend Laurent “who is that?” I thought he was the most beautiful man I had ever seen.
FL I actually knew that Jess would be at that bar that night. You can check the agency’s website to see who arrives in Tokyo. So my roommate and I already knew that she would be there And a few days later, my friend was told that she would be at the bar that night. So, we decided to go check it out and that’s how I met Jess, like a stalker!
RH Was it love at first sight?
JG I would say passion, it was passion at first sight. I was really passionate.
FL Jess is Jess. People who know her, know that she never goes unnoticed. I’ve felt a lot of different feelings since I first met her and love has always been the strongest one.
RH How long had you been dating before you found out you were expecting?
JG We found out that we were having a baby about two years after we first met.
FL Actually, it was two and a half years later.
RH Was it planned?
JG No, it wasn’t planned at all. It was a big surprise.
RH What was your initial reaction?
JG Well, I cried a lot as I didn’t know what to do. I knew I was pregnant, I felt it, and I told Chico that I needed to take a pregnancy test. I didn’t feel like myself and I just needed to confirm it. I couldn’t believe it! I think I did five pregnancy tests to make sure it was real.
FL I had no reaction. I tried visualizing what life would be like with a kid. Today, at just twenty-three, I’m happily married and I have the most beautiful baby in the world.
RH What would you say was the biggest challenge in becoming parents?
JG We were living in Paris at the time, so we decided to move to Canada and that completely changed our lifestyle. The biggest challenge in the process of becoming a parent was to experience something that was so new for the both of us. It was like nothing we had ever experienced before. However, it ended up being the best thing that ever could’ve happened to me. I believe that everything happens for a reason and I’m really thankful for my family and how my life has turned out.
FL Having a kid is a big change in anyone’s life. Everything changes, you need to adapt and realize that family always comes first.
RH Do you have a deeper appreciation for what your parents did for you after having a baby of your own?
JG Yes and I’ve always appreciated them. I’m really close to my parents, especially to my mum. She is everything to me, I still talk to her every day. She’s always there for me, and now that I have a baby I see my mum as a superhero.
FL They have always devoted their time and love to me and my sisters. I really appreciate how they still care and worry about me. I remember every moment of my life with them and that they were always dedicated to me, so I try to do the same. I’m really proud of my parents and the family they raised, it inspires me to build my own.
RH Do you come from a big family?
JG I have one brother but lots of aunts and cousins, I love it. Family is such a precious gift to me.
FL I’ve got quite a huge family. I have two sisters and many, many cousins, aunts and uncles. We’ve always been really close.
RH What was your childhood like?
JG Mont Saint-Hilaire is a really small town, everyone knows each other. I lived in a little farm house with horses, cows, chicken, dogs, cats and all kinds of other animals. It was amazing to be surrounded by all that nature as a child, I miss that sometimes.
FL I was born in Curitiba. When I was born, my parents moved to Foz do Iguaçu and we stayed there for seven years, after which we moved back to Curitiba. If we would go on holiday, we would always go to the beach.
RH Are your parents still together?
JG Yes, they are.
FL Yes, thirty-one years and counting.
RH Do you see any resemblance in how you raise your child and how your parents have raised you?
JG I’m exactly like my mum was with me when I was a child, maybe I’m a little bit more strict. I’m the one who instils discipline with Milo.
FL My parents raised me very well and I try to raise Milo with the same values.
RH Looking back, how much has Milo’s arrival changed you?
JG I don’t think it changed Chico, we’re still the same. I guess we are more responsible, have more of a routine. We wake up early and we don’t party anymore. We are parents now after all.
FL We are definitely much more responsible now.
RH How is it to go from travelling around the world to settling down to raise your child?
JG I’ve never been away from Milo for more than five days. The first two days are fine but after that, I really start to miss him and I can’t wait to get back home. He is everything to me.
FL We are always based somewhere, sometimes in Paris and then sometimes we do quick trips for work. It’s a good life for Milo because we’re with him all the time whenever we don’t have to work. We’re not your average parents that leave for work every day and don’t have that much time to spend with their kids.
RH Have you guys decided on a specific place to raise Milo?
JG We don’t know yet, we are currently based in New Jersey and looking to get a place in Paris. We’re also thinking of splitting the time equally until Milo starts school. We will have to decide where to settle down soon and see what works best for all of us.
FL I think New York would be a good option, Paris as well, but it all depends on our work. We’re really not sure yet.
RH How do you manage your life with work now that you have Milo?
JG There is always one of us that stays home. It’s rare that we both have to travel at the same time and when it does happen, my mum comes over to help out. She lives in Canada and it’s not that far from New York or New Jersey.
FL We always discuss our options and see what works best for us. So far so good.
RH You have travelled around the world many times, what are some of your favourite spots?
JG I’ve been travelling for so many years now and seen so many places in such a short amount of time, therefore, I never really had the chance to visit all the places I’ve been to. Although South Africadefinitely stole my heart, as well as Brazil and the Maldives, which is just unbelievable. And Paris of course.
FL There are many spots in the world that I’ve been to, but even more that are still left to be discovered. I love historical cities like Rome, Istanbul and Paris, but the best places for me are Brazil,Indonesia, Bodrum and Cinque Terre. They are like slices of paradise to me.
RH Tell me more about Milo.
JG Milo is an easy kid. He can be somewhat shy but also really independent, he likes to do his own thing. We’ve brought him with us ever since he was born and that has made him a super social kid, adapting to any given situation. He’s my little bundle of joy and he brings a sense of peace to my life. I’ve been a model for so long and I sometimes feel disconnected from the real world. Milo’s made me realize my purpose in life and that to me is amazing. Sharing moments with other mothers in the park is awesome, because I honestly feel like a regular person, having a normal routine like everyone else.
FL Milo is the best, though he can throw a pretty good tantrum as well, which is a sign he takes after his mum.
RH What’s your favourite sport or exercise ?
JG Hot yoga and Pilates.
FL I like loads of sports, like tennis, soccer, surfing, skateboarding and volleyball.
RH You’ve moved to New Jersey, what prompted the change ?
JG We moved from Montreal to Brooklyn when Milo was three months old and we bought our first place in downtown Jersey city. We are making this place our home and it’s really exciting. The reason we chose Jersey is because it’s more family oriented and it’s only ten minutes away from Manhattan, which works best in terms of keeping a balance between work and family life right now.
FL Williamsburg is a really nice place but it was getting too loud, just like Manhattan, so we decided to move to New Jersey and settle down.
RH What inspires you in each other?
JG Chico has a really positive energy around him, he always inspires me to look at the bright side of life.
FL Jess is always pushing me in a good way, motivating me to do new things. She inspires me to form new ideas as well.
RH How would you describe each other?
JG Chico has an old spirit. He is smart, responsible and the most patient person I’ve ever met in my life. He is the definition of beauty, both inside and out.
FL Jess is a really responsible woman who would do anything to protect her family. She’s always helping out other people and she has a really big heart. However, if she gets mad, I recommend you get out of her way as quickly as possible.
RH Any bad habits?
JG Everything Chico touches seems to disappear, very odd. He rarely puts something back in its place and it drives me crazy.
FL She can be pretty stubborn at times.
RH How do you divide the workload at home?
JG I clean, organize and cook. I do pretty much everything
FL I do help sometimes.
RH Who’s the best cook and what’s your favorite dish ?
JG We both know how to cook but I tend to cook more than Chico. I love Brazilian food.
FL Jess cooks more than me, so let’s just say she´s the better cook. She makes really good food, but I have few tricks up my sleeve as well. My favourite dish is Empadão, which is a type of Brazilian pot pie. Of course, I make the world’s second best Empadã because no one can beat my mum.
RH Your favorite characteristic in each other?
RH You both started modelling at a very young age, do you think this has influenced your concept of beauty?
JG I think beauty is about what you project to the world from within, everyone has something beautiful about them. To me, someone’s character trumps any physical appearance.
FL When I started working I never imagined I could have an impact on people’s lives. When I started to realize that people could be inspired by what I do, I felt really happy and glad about it.
RH How do you feel about social media and its influence?
JG It’s really flattering to see all these people following us, they always say nice stuff about our family. I’m happy if I can be a good example to the younger generation and inspire them to love with a pure heart and build a family.
FL I never really understood how I got so many followers since the start of my modelling career. I started using social media to be able to show more about my life and who I am apart from my work.I have the best fans.
RH Do you think these pictures really reflect who you are?
JG They do and yet they don’t. We share photos of moments where we are happy and having fun or when we see something beautiful and of course it’s always us at our best.
FL Images can only show so much, what we share are just tiny fragments of our lives. We are much more than just a snapshot.
RH What does the year ahead hold for you guys?
JG Well, we do have a lot of projects going on but we are keeping everything under wraps, as nothing is concrete yet.
FL We definitely have many more projects to come.
RH How do you see the future ?
JG I’d like to be in Brazil with my beautiful family.
